“Sisters were the foot soldiers of Catholic education.
Those of us who marched with them are glad we did. Don't Chew Jesus!
gives us a chance to relive that journey.”
John Powers, Author of Do Patent Leather Shoes
Really Reflect Up?
“My earliest memories from kindergarten and all the way through high
school were of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary from
Scranton. Like so many other students of that time, I am forever in
their debt and keep them in my prayers daily for a happy eternity
following their wonderful lives on earth.”
Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C
President Emeritus
University of Notre Dame
***
Filled with fond
recollections and touching stories, these tales from hundreds of
contributors pay tribute to nuns, those monochromatically clad monitors
of the right, the wrong, and the holy. Catholic nuns are portrayed as
devoted and passionate women who, armed with an arsenal of educational
weaponry ranging from creative storytelling to psychological terrorism,
had the massive responsibility of molding children into model citizens
of God. DON'T CHEW JESUS! covers
subjects ranging from religious training, habits, and devotion to
discipline, pranks, and the always-dicey sex education. Readers are
introduced to such legends-in-the-making as baseball-playing nuns,
telepathic nuns, gun-toting nuns, and even skinny-dipping nuns. These
nuns have seen it all—the silly or the sad, the frightening or
sublime—and always keep their gazes directed upward.

JESUS!, visit

Danielle Schaaf
and Michael Prendergast are lifelong friends who met as Catholic
School first graders in South Florida. Early on a nun told them they
were bold and cheeky. Not much has changed in forty years.
For nearly 25 years,
Danielle has been a public relations consultant in Houston, and Michael,
an attorney with a labor employment law firm in Jacksonville, Florida.
Both are married, their spouses enduring nearly twenty years of bold and
cheeky behavior. Their children – Danielle’s twin sons and daughter, and
Mike’s two daughters – are masters in eye-rolling. Active in their
churches as a lector and CCE teacher, they’re passing along their
Catholic heritage to their children, although none have volunteered to
follow in their parents’ footsteps as a Sodality Girl or president of
the Altar Boy Society.
Blaming Irish bloodlines, the authors
share a gift of blarney, quick wit and love of storytelling. Danielle
and Mike are skilled public speakers with dozens of presentations and
media interviews under their belts.
Not bad for a couple of bold and cheeky
kids. |

So Say We All:
Collected Thoughts and Opinions on Battlestar Galactica
October 2006
Edited by Richard
Hatch, Battlestar Galactica's Apollo and Tom Zarek
Suggested Retail Price:
$17.95 US | $24.95 CAN
Special Smart Pop Price:
$14.36 US | $20.36 CAN
In 2003 the Sci Fi Channel released its original
miniseries based on the classic 70’s science fiction show Battlestar
Galactica. This re-imagination of the original series provided 180
minutes of incredible television that kept the audience’s rapt
attention. It was obvious that they had a winner on their hands; the
next year eager fans got an entire season. The show has been approved
for a third season and there is currently serious talk of NBC picking it
up. Science fiction is known for raising difficult questions;
Battlestar Galactica is no exception. At times shocking and intense,
the show tackles such topics as martial law, power and corruption,
torture and interrogation tactics, artificial intelligence, and
ultimately what it is to be human. How do you maintain faith in the gods
when you’re enmeshed in an Armageddon of your own making? Is Zarek a
terrorist or a freedom fighter? What are the identity politics of a
Cylon who looks human? Is torturing a Cylon any worse than putting one
out the air lock? What ethical complexities crop up when one misstep
could mean the annihilation of the human race? SO SAY WE ALL
provides an in-depth, intelligent exploration of the questions that make
Battlestar Galactica such an engaging, thought-provoking show.
Born in Santa Monica, California, Richard Hatch is
best known for his portrayal of Apollo on the original Battlestar
Galactica and Tom Zarek on the revised Battlestar Galactica.
Hatch was studying classical piano at the age of eight, and knew he
wanted to carve out a career as a performer before he reached his teens.
After attending Harbor College in San Pedro, he joined a Los Angeles
repertory company with which he traveled to New York City in 1967. He
performed in the plays “Song of Walt Whitman,” “Young Rebels” and a
production called “Exercise,” which Hatch directed. Hatch was cast as
the original Philip Brent on All My Children in 1970 and later
played Inspector Dan Robbins on the television series The Streets of
San Francisco. |

James Bond in the 21st Century: Why

“James Bond. Women want him, men want to be him.”
On November 17, 2006, Casino Royale, the 21st official James Bond film,
will be released. Much has changed since the first Bond film, Dr. No,
premiered in 1962. We’ve experienced the civil rights movement,
feminism, the fall of the Soviet empire and 9/11, not to mention more
than a few James Bonds and countless numbers of scantily clad and
increasingly capable Bond girls. The world has changed, yet James Bond
endures. Or does he? JAMES BOND IN THE 21ST CENTURY takes a fun,
irreverent look at everyone’s favorite spy. From letters of advice to
Blofeld (“construct your next secret lair WITHOUT a self-destruct
button”) to debates on the sexiest Bond girl, from the real reason we
watch the films to why we still want to be James Bond at all, JAMES
BOND IN THE 21ST CENTURY examines the James Bond phenomenon with
affection, nostalgia and tongue firmly planted in cheek.

This is Chick-Lit
September 2006
Edited by Lauren
Baratz-Logsted
Suggested Retail Price:
$14.95 US | $20.95 CAN
Special Smart Pop Price:
$11.96 US | $16.76 CAN

“A wonderful compilation of
talented and diverse authors ... a long overdue and smart answer
to the naysayers of an often maligned genre. It’s funny, a
little edgy, thoughtful and thoroughly entertaining, not to
mention lots of interesting and eye-opening stuff for clever
guys who want to see how the other half thinks.”
Nelson DeMille,
bestselling author of Plum Island
“Like a
lot of snotty literary types, I have often sneered at chick
lit … I’m here to tell you: I was wrong. These stories,
which take chick lit beyond its Bridget Jonesian beginnings,
show that it’s time to take this maturing genre a little
more seriously. In this round of the culture wars, at least,
the point goes to the chick-lit girls.”
Priya Jain, BUST
Magazine |
Chick-lit is
lit.
In
the last decade, chick-lit has exploded in popularity. Readers relate to
the stories told by a growing group of powerful and fun women: chick-lit
writers.
THIS IS CHICK-LIT
sets out to prove that chick-lit is not only enjoyable, but smart
and timely. With an introduction that accurately highlights the argument
between “Chick” and “Lit” and a collection of stories from the country’s
best fiction writers, This is Chick-Lit offers the best of the best.
It’s thought-provoking, funny and most of all entertaining from start to
finish.
Rebelling against the Random House title, This is Not Chick-Lit,
THIS IS CHICK-LIT
defends the worth of the genre through various
contributors who prove that being labeled “chick-lit” doesn’t make a
story, or its author, part of the literary underclass, but quite the
opposite.

This is Burning Man:
The Rise of
a New American Underground
July 2006
Brian Doherty
Suggested Retail Price:
$14.95 US | $20.95 CAN
Special Smart Pop Price:
$11.36 US | $15.36 CAN
“When I received a
copy of This is Burning Man ... I trembled. I couldn’t wait to
open it up and learn who was actually behind an event that I greatly
admire and always look forward to attending. This is a rapturous story
of the world’s greatest messengers: its artists. It is amazing to follow
how the fragile ecosystem of the art world comes together to form the
Burning Man, celebrating the Burning Man, and then return him to ashes.”
- Perry Ferrell
“Burning Man is a
wondrous topic. The yearning to gather is a primal one, and Burning Man
is a magical example. It’s based on, as Brian Doherty describes, on a
love for creating and experiencing: ‘The world is a desert. It’s up to
us to fill it in.’ By capturing the people and the wonder of Burning
Man, Doherty has contributed to this process.”
-
Walter Isaacson, author of Benjamin Franklin
A provocative look
at the extraordinary annual Burning Man festival—held each year before
Labor Day, and drawing thousands of people from all walks of life to the
forbidding Black Rock Desert in Nevada—spotlights the radically
self-reliant and vibrantly creative community that gathers for a
week-long stay that culminates in the burning of a symbolic wooden man.
The glamorous and
anarchic aspects of the makeshift city—ideas that are at once ingenious
and unimaginable in normal society—are detailed including a three-story
temple composed of discarded dinosaur puzzle pieces, a giant
flame-spewing metal-lotus flower, and a glowing white whale sailing over
the starry desert sky. The magnificent spirit of a festival where money
and spectators are not allowed is captured here, bringing a piece of the
whimsical, strange, and enlightened energy to those who've never
participated as well as to veterans wishing to reminisce.

Star Wars on
Trial: Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Debate the Most Popular
Science Fiction Films of All Time
June 2006
Edited by David Brin
and Matthew Woodring Stover
Suggested Retail Price:
$17.95 US | $24.95 CAN
Special Smart Pop Price:
$14.36 US | $20.36 CAN
Star Wars is Under
Fire!
The most
profitable and arguably the most popular science fiction series of all
time finally stands trial!
The release of
Star Wars in 1977 redefined science fiction cinema forever. With
revenues of more than four billion dollars for the films alone, Star
Wars mainstreamed science fiction in the minds of both corporate
executives and the general public. Star Wars redefined science
fiction publishing as well. The incredible success of Star Wars, its
impact on science fiction publishing and its strengths and its flaws,
have aroused strong opinions and powerful emotions within the science
fiction community.
Star Wars on Trial
finally settles the arguments that have been raging for nearly 30 years.
Leading science fiction writers will debate every aspect of the Star
Wars epics, from politics to religion, from the impact on bookstore
shelf space to the overall logic of the saga. Is George Lucas a hero for
finally bringing science fiction’s message to a mass audience, or is he
a villain who doesn’t truly understand the genre he claims to be working
in?
With Hugo Award
winner and New York Times bestselling author David Brin
heading up the prosecution and Matthew Woodring Stover, New
York Times bestselling author, leading the defense, this debate
promises to be intense, illuminating and great fun for both fans and
detractors of what is considered by many to be the most important
science fiction property of our time.
Is Star Wars guilty or innocent of the following eight charges?
-
The politics
of Star Wars are anti-democratic and elitist
-
While claiming
mythic significance, Star Wars portrays no admirable religious or
ethical beliefs
-
Star Wars
novels are poor substitutes for real science fiction and are driving
real SF off the shelves
-
Science
fiction filmmaking has been reduced by Star Wars to poorly written
special effects extravaganzas
-
Star Wars has
dumbed down the perception of science fiction in the popular
imagination
-
Star Wars
pretends to be science fiction, but is really fantasy
-
Women in Star
Wars are portrayed as fundamentally weak
-
The plot holes
and logical gaps in Star Wars make it ill-suited for an intelligent
viewer
